Online Learning Is Not the Future

  • In “Online Learning Is Not the Future” in Inside Higher Education, Peter Herman (2020) argues that online education is not what students prefer. Herman claims that online education doesn’t have the structural consistency that face-to-face classes have. He provides many sources that state that schools are built to provide an environment where students can devote their attention to the task at hand; an element that working from home lacks. Online learning often comes with many distractions. In many cases, students share their learning space with family, which can lead to constant disruptions.
  • Additionally, the biggest distractions lie with our technology, which we also rely on to be our source of learning. Another reason mentioned by Herman is the lack of dialogue that accompanies online learning. Students find themselves less engaged behind a screen due to the absence of personal connections. There is no room for feedback, arguments, and experimenting with ideas, all of which aids in students’ wiliness to participate. Other disagree with Herman, claiming Zoom meetings restored the ability to conversate and collaborate with others. Herman responds by stating that Zoom has many technical issues that it has not yet mastered that can hinder the quality of communication. The author’s view that online learning is not in the best interest of the future generations, is supported by specific evidence; through the use of actual student opinions, Herman strengthens his argument.
